על אדן חלון סלון ביתה של אביגיל פריד עשרות כלים, בקבוקים אגרטלים, קערות וכוסות. הכלים מסודרים כטבע דומם על רקע נוף אופייני של ישוב קהילתי. הנוף לא חשוב, החשוב הוא האור שנכנס דרכו ונח על הכלים אותם מציירת אביגיל שוב ושוב, מזיזה ומציירת, ואז מזיזה בתוך הציור. מנסה לייצר קומפוזיציה מושלמת במהלך אינסופי אובססיבי, ציור ועוד ציור, תיקון על תיקון הנה עוד רגע וזה שם. מזיזה שוב את הכלי, מוסיפה לימון, אגס, מתקנת. עכשיו השינוי מוצא חן בפני עצמו, אביגיל שותלת אותו בתוך ציור ישן, מוסיפה שכבה על ציור מלפני שלוש שנים. זה אמור היה להתאים בדיוק, אבל בכל זאת דורש תיקונים. הטבע הדומם לכאורה, זז ללא הרף, הוא הופך להיות מהלך מובהק של ציור, תרגיל הבנה של ראיה והתבוננות רדיקלית.

אביגיל עובדת בצבעי שמן, ההתייבשות האיטית של החומר מאפשרת גמישות טכנית ורעיונית. הטכניקה מזמנת מהלך ארוך ומתמשך ומאפשרת שינוי וחיפוש. אביגיל מחפשת את המופשט בתוך המציאות, היא מפרקת כדי ליצר לכידות מתוך הבנה עמוקה שרכיבי המציאות עשויים צורה וכתם.  בזמן העבודה, עולם המציאות נשאר בחוץ והמשחקיות של עולם הציור נכנסת לפעולה.

הגמישות החומרית, ההתייבשות האיטית והעבודה בשכבות עבות מביאות את הציור לכדי הסתבכות הדורשת את אותו תיקון מוזכר. תיקון זה, הוא חלק חשוב בפעולת הציור של אביגיל. מהלך העבודה הוא בדיקה חוזרת ונשנית של הדברים שכבר קיימים על הבד ורצון לשפר אותם כך שיתאימו. יתאימו למה? למהלך פנימי עמוק והלך רוח אינטימי שבין הציירת לבין הציור. למרות שמדובר בחפצים, הציור של פריד הוא אישי והבעתי מאוד. האקספרסיביות החזקה עוברת התמרה לפורמליזם ציורי שמהווה הדגמה חיה לכך שלפעמים מה שמצויר הוא מעין תרגום ויזואלי לדבר החשוב באמת והוא - איך אותו דבר מצויר. פריד יוצרת ציורים מלאי חומר ואנרגיה, בציוריה, 'הטבע הדומם' על רבדיו ההיסטוריים והחומריים הרבים זז ומתחדש.

On the window sill of the living room of Avigail Fried's house are dozens of dishes, bottles, vases, bowls and glasses. The vessels are arranged as a still life against a typical landscape of a community settlement. The view is not important, rather the essential feature is the light that enters through it and rests on the objects that Avigail paints again and again; moves and paints, and then moves within the painting. Striving to produce a perfect composition in an endless obsessive process, painting and more painting, mending and redressing here and there – and then, in a moment it happens. She moves the vessel again, adds lemon, pear, another alteration. Now the change is pleasing in itself, Avigail implants it into a previous painting, adding a layer on top of a work from three years ago. It was supposed to fit just right, but still needs readjusting. The seeming still life, continuously moving, becomes a distinct flourish of painting, an exercise in the understanding of sight and radical observation.

Avigail works with oil paints, whereby the slow drying of the material allows for technical and conceptual flexibility. The technique summons a long and continuous process that enables variation and exploration. Avigail seeks out the abstract within reality, she disassembles to create cohesion out of a deep understanding that the elements of reality are made of form and marks. In the midst of working, the real world remains outside and the playfulness of the artistic creation takes over.

The elasticity of the material, the slow drying process and the application of thick layers instill into the painting an entanglement that calls for such a constant readjustment. These ongoing modifications are an important facet of Avigail's active painting practice. The work progresses by means of repeated examinations of the components already existent on the canvas and a desire to improve them so that they coincide. Coincide with what? With a deep inner development and an intimate correspondence between the painter and the painting. Although these are objects, Fried's painting is very personal and expressive. The distinct expressiveness is transformed into a pictorial formalism serving as a living demonstration that sometimes what is painted becomes a visual translation of the acutely important question, to wit – how the work is depicted. Fried creates paintings full of matter and energy; in her works 'still life' – with its abundance of historical and material layers – constantly shifts and revives itself.
